or Guangzhou accommodation? Guangzhou is the capital of the Guangdong Province in the People’s Republic of China. It is located on the Pearl River, which allows navigation into the South China Sea, therefore making Guangzhou an important port city in its province. The city is also located just 120 kilometers (75) to the northwest side of Hong Kong. A 2000 census determined that Guangzhou has an estimated population of over 6 million, which makes it the most populous city in Guangdong. The city is an important manufacturing and industrial hub in China. It has been nicknamed ‘Flower City’, ‘Five Goats City’, ‘Ceiba City’, ‘Goats City’, and Wheats City.
Guangzhou has a long standing history. It has always been significant to China’s trade market. The Treaty of Nanking, which was signed in 1842, however, ended the port city’s manipulation of English Trade. Panyu was the first city to be established where Guangzhou now stands. It was founded in 214 and was later expanded to be the Nanyue Kingdom. By 111 BC, the city was annexed by the Hand Dynasty into a provincial capital, which it remains so today. Its name is taken from the Guang Prefecture, which was once seated there.
The city is known for being the top manufacturing hub on the Pearl River Delta. It has one of China’s leading producers with a 2008 GDP of around $118 Billion. Guangzhou also serves as the host of the country’s ‘Canton Fair’, which is an Import/Export Fair held biannually in April and October.
Aside from being an industrial center, the city is also known for its Cantonese culture, cuisine, people, music, and opera. It is also peppered with parks and gardens including the Baiyun Mountain, Luhu Park, and Yuexiu Park.
