or Guildford accommodation? The town of Guildford is in Surrey, halfway between Portsmouth and London. It is a royal town, thanks to the castle, which was used by the king during the 15th century, and, while it is a midsized town, it retains its old world charm. The town can be reached by bus and train, or taxi from either Heathrow or Gatwick, and, while it is possible to walk around the town centre, you may want to take the bus or a taxi to attractions that are further afield. Most people will know the author, Lewis Carroll, from his books like Alice in Wonderland. What you might not know is that he lived, and died, in Guildford, and his house, Chestnuts, is open to the public. The Guildhall and Abbot’s Hospital are two more architectural attractions in the town, and Guildford Museum, on Quarry Street, will give further insight into the town’s history. The Guildford Castle, and it’s grounds, which dates back to medieval times, is another attraction well worth visiting, and the ruined St Catherine’s Chapel, near the centre of town, is also worth the walk up the River Wey, or you could opt for a guided boat tour of the river. Make sure you are in Guildford in July for Guildfest, or spend some time in a traditional pub like the King’s Head or the Royal Oak.
