Gustrow was founded by a grandson of Henry the Lion and became a summer residing area for the dukes of Mecklenburg in the 14th century and after the division of Mecklenburg in 1621, Gustrow became the capital of Mecklenburg-Gustrow. Attractions in Gustrow include the 15th century Schloss (German for Castle), built in Renaissance style; the castle's interior is a beauty with gorgeous stucco ceilings and a remarkable collection of art from medieval, ancient and Renaissance periods. There are also old weapons, coins and glass work on exhibitions. Apart from the artistic beauty, there is the garden parterre which has lavender, assorted shrubbery and small ponds. A festival called Summer Dream in the Old Palace is held each year when the lavenders blossom in July. The Cathedral, which is a 12th century Brick Gothic cathedral; following his experience in World War I Barlach did a sculpture called Floating Angel which was a memorial for the war victims and a signal for the journey into the next life. The grave of Duke Ulrich III and his two wives can be found at the cathedral too. Apart from art and architecture, there is a 500 acre environmental and nature park, which contains wolves and owls in their natural habitat. There is even an Aqua Tunnel which enables you to walk through the valley of the river. Other attractions are the St. Mary church which was rebuilt in the 19-th century; Ernst Barlach's Atelierhaus (studio), which exhibits a large collection of his works and the 18th century Townhall at the marketplace.
