The Port Festival is held annually from August 1st to 6th and is Hakodate’s biggest festival, and is known for its festive Squid Dance. Hakodate Christmas Fantasy is held during December 1 to 25, at which, a giant Christmas tree is displayed on the sea in the red brick warehouses area. Morning Market, crammed into a couple of bay-front buildings, has vendors selling a variety of seafood, but the main attraction is the enormous selection of Hokkaido’s famous crabs. Glassware and music boxes can also be bought at the old Meijikan Post Office. Hakodate Beer Hall is a food and beer restaurant that has a large food menu, which includes a good selection of seafood dishes and locally brewed beer. The Hokuhokutei restaurant is a shushi restaurant that offers great food at good prices. Some of the pubs in Hakodate include Bagus, Bar Big Job, FBI, Eily’s and Lucky Pierrot. Some options for accommodation are Oyado Aozora Inn, cozy with clean tatami rooms and is run by an English-speaking Japanese lady. The Minshuku Sumitomo-Inn has typical Japanese-style rooms with bathrooms. Hakodate Youth Guest House is a clean and friendly guest-house right next to Hakodate Park.
