Japan)
or Hakone accommodation? Hakone is a mountainous area west of Tokyo in Japan and the Hakone checkpoint on the historical Tokaido road marks the beginning of the Kanto region. Going by plane or train will take you to Hakone. To get around Hakone, you can make use of the usual bus system, which is sometimes closed for a short period of time in winter, but replaced with shuttle buses, or there are other very interesting modes of transport to use.
There is the very scenic Hakone-Tozan Line mountain railway from Odawara to Gora via Hakone-Yumoto, the Hakone-Tozan Cablecar up the mountainside from Gora to Sounzan. The Hakone Ropeway from Sounzan down to Togendai on Lake Ashinoko is a sightseeing trip on its own, as it goes via the boiling sulfur pits of Owakudani. If you are travelling with children then the Hakone sightseeing Trips will be great for them, as the ships are decked out like the Disneyland version of pirate ships and sail across the lake from Togendai to Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi. Hakone Open Air Museum is in a beautiful parkland setting, and has a wide variety of artwork and sculptures on display, including a Picasso exhibition of paintings and pottery.
A visit to Hakone would not be complete without relaxing at a Japanese hot spring. Two of these are Tenzan Tojigo, which offers indoor and outdoor baths, sauna etc., and Hakone Kowakien Yunessun is an indoor complex which features rapids, Dead Sea style salt baths, and Jacuzzis. The outdoor area of this complex offers waterfalls, rocks and waterslide and a popular relaxation section which includes a renowned sake bath as well as coffee, green tea and wine baths.
While you are visiting Hakone, do try the black eggs, so called because they are boiled on-site and their shells are mottled black due to a chemical reaction with the sulfurous water. These eggs are quite tasty and according to Japanese legend, every one you eat will add seven years to your life. Interesting!
The Kappa-Tengoku is a low-budget inn featuring open-air baths on the roof. The rooms are Japanese style and comfortable, the staff is very friendly and welcoming and you definitely get more than what you pay for. Fuji Hakone Guest House, Hotel Okuyumoto, Hotel Okada, and Hotel Nanpuso are all options for people looking for mid-range accommodation. The Gorakadan has 37 beautifully designed guest rooms with large bathrooms. The hotel itself is styled after a ryokan, but offers many more services, including a pool and spa. Very luxurious and expensive, but, perfect for those visitors who wish to be totally pampered. - Browse the Hakone Map or compare Hakone accommodation from Hotels, Motels, B&Bs,
