It has an area of 64.3 square kilometers shared by 79,985 (2006 estimate) residents. It was on the land situated between the two Calumet Rivers that the first permanent settlement was built on in 1847. The industrialization of the area is attributed to the G.H. Hammond Company that the town is named after. The area was incorporated in 1884, making it one of the oldest cities in Lake County.
Some of the notable points of interest in Hammond include the Gibson Woods Nature Preserve, John Dillinger Museum which provides an interactive educational and historical tour of the life of the infamous bank robber, Theatre at the Center, Lost Marsh of Hammond, and the Kennedy Theatre.
