Ramona is a play based on a novel written by Helen Hunt Jackson and tells the story of an orphan girl of part-Scottish and part-Native American heritage. It is also one of the longest running outdoor plays in the U.S.
Other than several golf courses, this Riverside County city is home to eight parks scattered throughout the city. These parks are recreational centers for locals and tourists with facilities like sheltered picnic area and tables, shade structures, grill areas, playground, turf area, and hiking trails. Among these are Weston Park, Simpson Park, Mary Henley Park and Gibbel Park.
The Diamond Valley Lake is one of the best places to visit while in Hemet as it is teeming with scenery and local wildlife. It not only serves as a reservoir but also a recreational area with its hiking and cycling trails, fishing areas, and camping sites. Boating and fishing are also permitted on the lake which has a variety of freshwater species.
Hemet has two museums – The Hemet Museum, which features local history including Native American artifacts and the Western Science Center, which showcases Ice Age mammals. It also has an outdoor amphitheater, the Ramona Bowl, which is known to have produced the play ‘Ramona.’
A favorite event in Hemet is the Ramona Outdoor Pageant, which despite being a local pageant, has already attracted almost 2 million tourists from around the world. Other notable events are the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Riverside County Fair and national Date Festival, Balloon and Wine festival, and Cherry Festival.
