The flea market mania begins on May during the Hillsville Flea Market and Gun Show at the several acres of land at Bowman's Field, drawing more than 200,000 shoppers every year. It is followed by the much bigger Annual Labor Day Flea Market during September, which attracts over 500,000 visitors a year. It is touted as the largest flea market in the U.S. to the south of Mississippi, almost consuming the entire town and drawing vendors from across Africa, South Korea and Germany. During these two events, a wide range of goods are being sold for bargain from guns, antiques, collectibles, and crafts to oddities and produce.

The Carroll Country House Courthouse, which is Hillsville’s historical museum, can provide a picture of the city’s past. It features a history of the Carroll County including its cities and towns, and recovered Native American artifacts. It can be toured only by appointment and opens from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Other historic sites in the city are the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home, The Hillsville Diner, and Hillsville Historic District.
