or Ierapetra accommodation? The city of Ierapetra is situated north-to-south axis of Crete, Greece and is the largest town on the south coast of Crete and the southernmost of Europe. Blessed with very mild climate, that is favourable to agriculture is the important reason for the development of many green houses to the west of the town, producing off season vegetable for export in the main European markets.
The town stands on the remains of the ancient city of Ierapytna and it is common that valuable pieces of antiquity are discovered, such as the most recent, full size statue of Goddess Demeter, housed in the local Museum. Lined along the sea front are numerous restaurants, taverns and bars for you to see and visit. The Venetian fortress stands guard at the entrance of the fishing port, built by the Venetians in 1212 and was restored and used as open theater during the summer cultural festivities of Kyrvia for you to attend and enjoy. Places of interest you can visit and explore are the Ierapetra Archaeological Collection; this museum exhibits various items dating from the Minoan, the Geometric, the Archaic, the Classical and Hellenistic and the Roman period; the Sitia Museum houses the most important finds excavated in eastern Crete and the exhibitions halls is decorated with items dating from the Minoan, Hellenistic and Geometric periods; the Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos this appealing museum is housing a rich collection of various items found in the surrounding and area dating from the Minoan Period to the Roman and the Zakros Archaeological Site is the smallest of the four Minoan palaces that displays a lot of vessels coming from the East.
From the small pier, boats leave every morning for the trips to the Chrisi Island that is famous for its white beaches and the turquoise sea. In Ierapetra you will see narrow streets with nice small cozy traditional houses where you can walk around. At the harbor front there are many restaurants and kafenions where you can have a snack or a drink. Some of the natural attractions for you to see are the Bramiana Dam, this lake area is the biggest wetland on Crete, and has become a nature reserve known for its birdlife; the Mount Dikti; the Mount Thryptis; the Selakano Forest and the Sarakina Gorge just to name a few. Ierapetra has some lovely sandy beaches outside the town and picturesque coastal villages with their beautiful little bays for you to visit and enjoy.
