The fourth largest city in the state, Independence is also known as the Queen City of Trail because it was the departure point for the Santa Fe, California and Oregon Trails. The area was originally the settlement by the Missouri and the Osage Indians and only became a part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
The city is steeped in history and culture, with its museums and libraries. Visitors to the city will find that there is an abundance of museums to satisfy their curiosity about the city, including the National Frontier Trails Museum, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum and the Puppetry Arts Institute. The Midwest Genealogy Center, the Center for the Study of the Korean War and the Merrill J. Mattes Research Library can also be found in the city. The two libraries open to the public are the Mid-Continent Public Library and the Kansas City Public Library. The city is also the headquarters of the Community of Christ, the largest denomination of the Church of Latter Day Saints.
The city is also home to several colleges and universities.
