It has a population of 8,154 based on the 2000 Census. It is one of a handful of communities designated as “Michigan Main Street”.

Iron Mountain started as a mining city operated by the Chapin Mine. It was on Millie Hill that the mine was set up beginning in 1879. After numerous unsuccessful shafts, the company finally decided to stop the operations but the two discoverers of the land – Dr. Nelson Powell Hulst and James John Hagerman – created a shaft for one last time. This time around, the team was able to find a rich iron ore. Thus, began the ear of mining in the area.

The company also built pumping equipment and the world’s largest steam engine to be used in the mine. When the mine shut down permanently in 1932, the pump was donated to the local government to serve as tourist attraction. After 50 years of outdoor exposure as a relic, a house was built for the pump; subsequently, the building was transformed into the Cornish Pumping Engine & Mining Museum. The abandoned mine also became the Millie Mine Bat Cave which is the largest bat hibernacula in the Midwest.
