The city of Istanbul has had a very long history. It served as the capital of several of Europe’s most powerful empires including the Romans, Byzantine, the Ottoman Empire, and the Latin Empire. The city was first known as Byzantium. It was later renamed into Constantinople in honor of the Roman Emperor Constantine. An attempt to rename the city Nova Roma, failed to catch on. Later on it was renamed Istanbul. A 2008 discovery uncovered a Neolithic settlement dating around 6500 BC in the city.
Istanbul serves as the political and economic center of Turkey. Its present economy is a diverse one. It is estimated that 38% of Turkey’s workspace can be found in Istanbul. Some of the top products manufactured in Istanbul and its surrounding regions include cotton, olive, oil, tobacco, and silk. Food processing, metalwork, and textile production are also important to Istanbul’s economy.
The city is served by several airports including the Ataruk International Airport and the Sabiha Gokcen International Airport.
