It was named after President Andrew Jackson before he became president and was the commander and hero of the US forces at the 1815 Battle of New Orleans. The city has been used as inspiration for writers as well as singers including Sufjan Stevens who created and sang “Jacksonville” and Mary Chapin Carpenter who created and sang “John Doe #24” based on the unknown deaf-blind man who wandered into town and was “adopted” and institutionalized (due to diabetes) for 48 years in the city yet his identity and origins remain a mystery.
One of the attractions in Jacksonville is the stopping point that belongs to the historic Underground Railroad. The city is also home to the Eli Bridge Company which is well known for creating and manufacturing Ferris Wheels and various amusement park rides. A “Big Eli Wheel” landmark is located right on the corner of S Main and E. Morton Streets.
