Jonesboro was formerly called Leaksville and was incorporated as a city in 1859. It is just a few miles away from Atlanta, Georgia and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.

The city is well-known as the location of the battlefield of the American Civil War which led to the fall of Atlanta in 1864. This was a historical battle that was a turning point in the war. It was this battle which led to the re-election of Abraham Lincoln two months later. Eventually the Lincoln’s re-election led to the downfall of the Confederacy the following year. It also gained in popularity when it became the setting of several scenes in the novel of Margaret Mitchell, ‘Gone With the Wind.’
