The city is well-known as the location of the battlefield of the American Civil War which led to the fall of Atlanta in 1864. This was a historical battle that was a turning point in the war. It also gained in popularity when it became the setting of several scenes in the novel of Margaret Mitchell, ‘Gone With the Wind.’
