or Kanab accommodation? Kane County’s county seat, Kanab has a population of 3,564 in the 2000 census. Local residents have referred to Kanab as ‘little Hollywood’ due to its being a popular filming location for western movies and TV series such as Gunsmoke, Planet of the Apes, Daniel Boone, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Stagecoach and The Lone Ranger among others.
Situated in the ‘grand circle’ area, Kanab is centrally situated among The Grand Canyon North Rim, Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park. Other nearby attractions also include Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, the private Moqui Cave and Best Friends animal sanctuary which is the largest animal sanctuary in the United States. Kanab hosts many hunting tours which many tourists enjoy.
Three lakes near Kanab is one of just two habitats for a snail species called Kanab Ambersnail. This species of snails were listed as endangered species by the US Fish and Wildlife Service in 1992. These snails have become a conservation priority of the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
On January 10, 2006, the Kanab mayor passed Resolution 1-1-06 entitled The Natural Family: A Vision for the City of Kanab, where their definition of ‘natural family’ was ‘"We envision a local culture that upholds the marriage of a man to a woman, and a woman to a man, as ordained of God... We see our homes as open to a full quiver of children, the source of family continuity and social growth. We envision young women growing into wives, homemakers, and mothers; and we see young men growing into husbands, home-builders, and fathers." The Sutherland sent this resolution to every Utah City, hoping for all of it to be adopted, but Kanab was the only one to do so.
