or Kelso accommodation? A city in Washington named after a Scottish town, Kelso is known for its Scottish tradition. Scottish influences in the city are best portrayed through their annual Highlander Festival. It gives tourists a chance to experience Scottish culture without leaving the U.S. The Highlander Festival, held every September at the Tam O’Shanter Park, is one of the top tourist draws in the city. Festivities are set off with a 15K Fun Run followed by a dance competition, games, parade of clans, and other entertaining events.
Kelso is also known as the "Smelt Capital of the World" as its Cowlitz River is the habitat of freshwater smelt fishes. Cowlitz River is also a perfect venue fishing trips as it is also one of the top salmon and steelhead producers in Washington. Other possibilities in the city and along the river are hiking, cycling, boating, hunting, and golfing.
Another must-see destination in Kelso is the Cowlitz County Historical Museum. Founded way back in 1949, the museum reveals the history of Cowlitz County and nearby areas. Included among the exhibits are a log cabin, a loggers' bunkhouse, a railroad depot, a 1925 Model "T" truck, and Native American artifacts including an original Cowlitz Indian canoe. Tourists can also bring home souvenirs from the museum’s gift shop.
