or Kenai accommodation? The City of Kenai is considered to be the heart of adventure in Alaska. It is located at the junction of Cook Inlet and Kenai River in Kenai Peninsula Borough of the State of Alaska. Even with a very large total area of 92 square kilometers, there are only 7,464 inhabitants in the city, according to the 2005 Census Bureau. That means that the population density is only at 89.7/km2.
According to archaeological evidence, the area was inhabited from 1000 BC to 1000 AD by Kachemak people which were displaced by the Dena'ina Athabaskan people. The Dena'ina village was named as Shk'ituk't, which translates to “where we slide down”. Russian fur traders arrived in 1741 and called the people as Kenaitze or Kenai people. There is confusion as the origin of the city’s name – it may be from the Inuit word “kenai” which means black bear or from the Russian name of Cook Inlet, “Kenayskaya”.
In 1791, the first Russians came but were met with hostility that soon led to a bloody battle. Then, the area was purchased along with the rest of Alaska by the United States and the army established a post in 1869; homesteads were opened in 1940.
Today, the city has many attractions to offer – the Kenai Parks & Recreation, Kenai Golf Course, and Alaska Classic Adventures; visitors can stay at Aspen Extended Stay Suites, Alicia's Eagle Rock Lodge, and Blonde Bear Bed and Breakfast. - Browse the Kenai Map or compare Kenai accommodation from Hotels, Motels, B&Bs,
