It is the fifth-largest city of Lower Austria and is approximately 70 km west of Vienna. Krems is located at the confluence of the Krems and Danube Rivers at the eastern end of Wachau valley, in the Waldviertel which is one of Europe's loveliest river landscapes. The historical center of Krems is one of the most beautiful in Europe. Over the centuries the town hascreated a unique cityscape here that has been lovingly cared for and preserved. Remains of the town wall are popular, but the biggest attraction in Krems is the town's late-Gothic Piarist church. The Steiner Tor, erected in 1480, is the only remaining medieval gate. The city wine museum which is located in one of the most beautiful monasteries in the land has a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere. The town has a varied calendar of annual events which include the Danube Festival, East-West Music Festival, Wachau Film Festival, Folk Music Festival, Children's and Young People's Theater Festival.
