Kumamoto Accommodation

Searching for hotels in Kumamoto (Japan) or Kumamoto accommodation?  Kumamoto, the capital of Kumamoto prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan, has a population of about 680,000 and is famous for its large castle, Lake Ezu and Suizenji Gardens. Kumamoto means “origin of the bear,” and because of the nearby giant volcano, its nickname is Hi No Kuni (fire country) and Mori no Miyako (capital of the forest).

One can get to Kumamoto by plane or train, and getting around in the city is accomplished through an extensive bus system and a simple two-line tram system. City day passes are available and can be used for both the bus system and tramlines.

Kumamoto Castle is the third largest castle in Japan, and also one of the most beautiful. Although the original castle was burned down during the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877, it was reconstructed in the sixties and some of the other buildings are the originals. It is a must see attraction which is actually the heart of the city.

If you would like to buy something to take home with you as a reminder, then the Kumamato Prefectural Traditional Crafts Centre is the place to go as it exhibits the various traditional crafts for which Kumamoto is well known.

Fujisaki Hachimangu Shrine is the most famous shrine in the city and is also the most crowded shrine in the city every New Year’s and other festivals, the most famous being the “Drunken Horse Festival” which is held every September.

Kamitori and Shimotori are two of the most popular and accessible shopping districts in the city. They have a wide variety of shops and cafes, as well as a large number of Japanese restaurants. Hikori no Mori, Tsuruya, Kumamoto Hanshin and Rice Terrace are just a few more of the numerous shopping malls and arcades in and around Kumamoto.
Some of the best places to experience really good food are, Dipper Dan, an ice cream and dessert parlor, is a local favorite, Ringo no Ki is a café that serves apple pie and the best tea and coffee, Azuma Sushi is the oldest and best sushi restaurant in Kumamoto. The Plaza del Sol is the only Mexican restaurant in Kumamoto, with Mexican chefs making the food, which is really good. Sri Lanka and Star of India are two Indian restaurants, which serve some of the best, spiciest, tastiest curry in town.

If its bars or pubs you are looking for, you will find one on practically everywhere. Jeff’s World Bar, Rock Bar Days, Shark Attack, Good Time Charlie’s, are just a few of the thousands around. There are also many clubs offering different styles of music to suit everyone. For accommodation, there is the Tokyo Inn, of which there are several around Kumamoto and are conveniently situated. The staff is courteous and helpful and they serve a fantastic breakfast, truly very good value for money.
