It was first settled in the 1830s when people residing in the Chicago area decided to relocate into the area when the great fire of 1871 occured and residents decided to transfer to this nearby village. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is only 5 miles southwest of Berwyn, Illinois and 11 miles west of Chicago, Illinois.
The village is host to several annual events such as the Pet Parade every June. The huge areas of woods like Bernis Woods and parklands such as La Grange Park provide visitors with a variety of activities, from hiking, jogging, biking, and sports, to simple sightseeing. Some of the attractions in an and around La Grange are museums like the Graue Mill and Museum and American Police Center & Museum, and other landmarks such as the Brookfield Zoo, Unity Temple, Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Area, and the La Grange Historical Society.
