Like most of the region, it is a popular destination for those looking for a seaside holiday. Lagoa has been around for some time, and was an important center during the Arabic period in Portugal, but it was only in 1773 that it officially became a town. Beaches are the main attraction in the area, and there are several, mostly lined by cliffs, to explore. Some of these are Carvalho, Cova Redondo and Mato, but there are options for everyone, whether you like your beaches busy and tourist friendly, or quiet and secluded. There are three golf courses in Lagoa, but only one championship course – Vale de Pinto.
