Switzerland)
or Lausanne accommodation? This city sits at the northern most point of Lake Geneva and it is truly a spectacularly beautiful place. It has been compared to San Francisco because of its very steep hills. In fact, the town was built on three hills and is surrounded by slopes of vineyards. The city is relatively free of cars and where it isn’t too steep, visitors will do themselves a favor by putting on their walking shoes and explore the cobbled alleyways to find lovely little boutiques and café’s and a variety of shops. More shops are to be found in the waterfront area. For those steep areas the best way to get around will be by bus, they are clean and safe and fast here.
The city has an older section, The Old Town, and this is where you will find the Old Cathedral, standing proudly in its entire Gothic splendor. There are many more history and art museums (the Olympic Museums is a favorite) and they are all worth a visit but do not forget your street map and speak slow and clear English when asking for directions. If you can speak French, all the better.
Also great places to visit are the parks, containing many Mediterranean plant species, and grand palace hotels like the Beau-Rivage Palace in Ouchy and the Hotel de l'Angleterre, were Lord Byron once stayed. There are many forested areas in Lausanne and if you are a nature lover you can just walk around for hours.
Restaurants are found in abundance. Try out a restaurant called Rochad. Its chef, said to have been the greatest chef in his day, has recently retired but handed over his reign to a much deserving Philippe Rochat who decided to name the restaurant after himself – if this is not confidence then nothing is. During the later hours of the day people start vacating the restaurants and start pouring into the late night café’s, bars, pubs and clubs of which there are quite a few. A favorite seems to be a club called MAD that regularly gets international DJ’s and is one of the biggest dance clubs in Switzerland.
As per usual there are a myriad of hotels and other accommodations to choose from, both local and international, both cheap and extremely expensive. If you prefer to stay in internationally recognized hotels there are two Best Westerns, a Tulip Inn, a Carlton and a Continental. - Browse the Lausanne Map or compare Lausanne accommodation from Hotels, Motels, B&Bs,
