The economy of the city had relied heavily on the railroad ever since its completion in 1893 as it became the Great North Railroad’s headquarters. So, it came as a heavy blow to the city when the railroad was transferred to Wenatchee in the 1920s.

After struggling for some time, the Project LIFE or Leavenworth Improvement for Everyone was implemented that would soon transformed the city into a theme town – a mock Bavarian village – just as Solvang in California had done. This project actually worked out well that it became a tourist attraction and served as model for another town’s (Winthrop’s) transformation.

Among the many attractions, facilities, and landmarks that the transformed town has to offer are the Leavenworth Skate Park, Cashmere Pioneer Village & Museum, Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center, and the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum. It is also home to the most-attended annual Oktoberfest celebrations outside of Munich, Germany.
