or Leeuwarden accommodation? The city of Leeuwarden is the regional capital of the Friesland region of the Netherlands. It is located in the north of the country, and is widely accepted to have been founded around the 10th century, although evidence suggests that there have been people in the area from as early as the 2nd century. Reaching Leeuwarden from elsewhere in the Netherlands is easy, thanks to an extensive train and bus system, and, once in town, many of the attractions are within walking distance of the town centre. Leeuwarden lies on the Middelzee River, and, before that water way became clogged with silt, was an important trading city. Today, however, the town is predominantly a university city, and one that is popular with tourists and the river is used for leisure purposes, rather than commerce. Oldehove, the Netherlands own leaning tower, is located in Leeuwarden, and there are several other historic buildings in the city worth visiting.
