Regardless of the fact that the total area of Lithonia is just 2 square kilometers and that it only had 2,187 residents based on the 2000 Census, it is considered to be a city – unusual, given the fact that a “real city” would need not less than 60,000 inhabitants to even be considered as a city. It is the founding home of the Lithonia Lighting Company.
The name of Lithonia, the city of stone, was derived from the fact that there is an abundance of granite and various stones in the area – “lithos” being the Greek word for stone. It is also located close to the world’s largest granite dome, the Stone Mountain, which is also home to the largest bas relief sculpture in the world – a carving of three of the Confederate leaders of the civil war.
