or Locarno accommodation? The Italian-speaking city of Locarno is situated at the northern tip of Lake Maggiore and is said to be the city with the mildest climate in Switzerland. There are plenty of things to see and do here, so whether it’s city or country life you crave, both can be found here in abundance.
In the city there is the Piazza Grande, the heart of the city if you will. It is a busy square, alive with shoppers and sightseers and surrounded by charming old houses. Of course this isn’t the only sight that attracts visitors; there is the Astrovia Locarno which is a model of the solar system, the Santuario della Madonna del Sasso where a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared to a Franciscan monk, The Casa Rusca Gallery, and the Castello Visconreo which today serves as a Municipal and Archeological Museum. Take a step back into time and visit the Citta Vecchia or the Old Town and where you will castle ruins and remains of old beautiful frescoes all around.
Besides sightseeing there are quite a few things to do in Locarno. Walk the promenade on Lake Maggiore. Ride the funicular up to the old monastery and cable car station from where you can take a cable car 1600 meters above the town and enjoy the view. There are plenty of shops around where you can find almost anything. In addition, if you’ve build up a hunger and thirst you will not have to look far to find a restaurant or café serving delicious cuisine from all over the world. However, if it’s Italian you crave you are definitely in the right place, the locals speak Italian and very much like to eat the same way. The nightlife is said to be a bit on the quiet side but as everybody likes different thing, check it out for yourself. There is a casino if you’re feeling lucky.
Locarno is also host to a few annual festivals. In July there is the Moon and Stars Music Festival. In the first two week in August on the Piazza Grande, the Locarno International Film Festival is held which boasts with the biggest open-air screen in Europe. In late May there is the American Music Festival and shortly after that the New Orleans Jazz Festival takes place.
