In the past, Locust Grove has served as a major retail center for fruits and other agricultural cultures, being the home of three cotton gins and a number of warehouses. The first store in the city was built on Main Street in 1870 and it was officially incorporated in 1893 and reincorporated in 1922.

Interesting sights to see when in Locust Grove include the Locust Grove Municipal Complex, which used to be the site of the Locust Grove institute. This structure has been entered in the National Register of Historic Places in the 80s. The Tanger Outlet Mall is a retail center that houses outlets for Liz Claiborne, Gap, Old Navy, Polo and Banana Republic. Noah’s Ark, a shelter and rehabilitation center for animals and children can also be found in the city. This is a non-profit, licensed facility that is allowed to take in a maximum of 24 children at a time.
