Peru)
or Machu Picchu accommodation? As far as historic sites go, there aren’t many that can rival Machu Picchu in Peru. Perched on a mountain ridge some two kilometers above sea level, the site alone guarantees that the area is one of the most breathtaking in the world. The Incan ruins date back to the 15th century, but it had been virtually unknown until the beginning of the twentieth; however, since then, it’s become a very popular tourist attraction, for those interested in discovering the largely erased Incan culture. In spite of this history, there’s very little known about Machu Picchu, and speculation is still rife as to why the Incas left their city in the clouds. This only adds to the eerie feeling as you walk through the century’s old dry stone buildings, and visit landmarks like the Temple of the Sun. Not knowing why the people left their mountain top hideaway less than one hundred years after it was built is a mystery. Other areas of the site, like the Intihuatana Stone, believed to be a clock or calendar, just add to this air of mystery – why did a civilization so advanced, in terms of technology, and even their amazing stone masonry skills, choose to abandon their city? While the ancient secrets of the Incas may never be known, a visit to Machu Picchu is certainly well worth while, and if you do plan a trip, make sure to stay in nearby Cusco, and allocate a lot of time to explore the ruins. - Browse the Machu Picchu Map or compare Machu Picchu accommodation from Hotels, Motels, B&Bs,
