Serving as Morgan County’s county seat, Madison is regionally known as ‘the town Sherman refused to burn.’ This was because it was spared when General Sherman marched to sea in the Civil War. He spared the town because it was the home of Joshua Hill who was a pro-union senator. Many mistakenly believe, however, that he spared the town because it was too beautiful to burn.

Most of Madison’s almost 100 Antebellum homes have been intricately restored which led to the names of the town as ‘The Prettiest Small Town in America’ by Travel Holiday Magazine.

The birthplace of WW II hero Albert Harris, Madison is also home to many art galleries and museums including The Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum. This museum is where you will find the largest collection of microcars in the world, featuring over three hundred bubble cars. These cars were born in Europe in the time of the depression after WW II.

The town has also been featured in many films including Richard Pryor’s 1977 Greased Lightning.
