The city can be reached by air, in around half an hour, from Chiang Mai, and there are also buses and trains from that city, as well as from Bangkok. In spite of its status as provincial capital, Mae Hong Son is a small town, and while there are buses, walking will get you around the city quite easily. The temples, or Wats, are a popular attraction in the town, and many are also located on the shores of the lake. Wat Phai Doi, especially, is popular with visitors, thanks to its elevated location, and beautiful views of the city. Trekking into the surrounding hills and wilderness areas is another big attraction in Mae Hong Son, and most of the guesthouses offer guided treks to various destinations. There are also waterfalls to explore, and the interesting phenomenon of Fish Cave, which draws thousands of fish in, but of which few ever exit. When it comes to food, the night market is a great place to find street vendors, and Jiji and the Salween River Restaurants both offer great food at affordable prices.
