or Mahabalipuram accommodation? Mahabalipuram is a city known for its shore temples, ancient monuments and sandy beaches. The city is located in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The city was developed as a sea port during the 7th and 10th century, Pallavas rule. Legend has it that the city was named “Mamallapuram” after Pallava King Mamalla.
During the reign of the Pallava Kings, several monuments were built in the city and therefore resulted in the area being recognised as a World heritage site by UNESCO. The main monument is the Shore temple. It was built in the 7th century along the Coromandel coastline and further developed by Narasimha Varman II, (Rajasimha).
Other places of interest include the Varaha Cave and the Sculpture Museum, Arjuna Penance built by king Narasimha I, Koneri cave and the Archaeological survey of India museum. Visitors can also enjoy the view from the Olakaneswara Lighthouse which means the flame eyed shiva. The Mahabalipuram dance festival is held for 4 weeks on Saturdays and Sundays and during the winter months of December and January and is a must see event.
