It has been a popular tourist resort since Roman times, with the longest unbroken stretch of beach on the Amalfi coastline. On the coast near the city you will see a Sulfur Spring and a number of stalactitic caves which resembles the Blue Grotto in Capri. You can take a stroll around the pathways, and up the winding stairs, of Maiori which is a very pleasant experience, that gives amazing views just around every corner. The present city features a series of white houses, most with barrel vault ceilings and built on terraces within a picturesque web of alleys and stairways.
While in Maiori you will see the main monument and symbol of this city, which is the Cathedral of St. Andrew that is preceded by an impressive staircase. Other attractions are the Campanile Bell Tower, built in 1180, that is made of bifore and trifore windows, green and yellow majolica roof tiles, all with Arabesque influenced features, the Civic Museum in the Town Hall have preserved the famous "Tavole Amalfitane" the first legal text of navigation rules which had a great influence up till the XVII century. While taking a walk up to the Valle dei Mulini, which is worth your visit is the Paper Museum, located in the ruins of an old medieval mill of the XIII century. There are two main festivals held in Maiori each year, they are the annual Eggplant Festival, that displays delicious tastings of local eggplant recipes for your taste buds, or you may wish to part take in the Santa Maria Assunta Festival that celebrates the saint patron of Maiori.
