or Marion accommodation? Marion is one of the largest retail and trade centers located in the rural area of Southern Illinois. Located at the intersection of Route 13 and Interstate 57, at the edge of the Crab Wildlife and Refuge, Marion was named after General Francis “Swamp Fox” Marion, a military hero who fought in the Revolutionary War. The area is known as a major tourism base because of its close proximity to various parks, wineries and historic sites in the surrounding areas.
A major point of interest is the Crab wildlife and Refuge and the Shawnee National Forest. It is also the home of the Williamson County Museum. Being one of the largest retail areas in Southern Illinois, the city is also home to a thriving tourism industry. Its 1,100 hotel rooms and numerous restaurants make Marion the area along Interstate 57 with the largest concentration of tourism related businesses. In the summers, midget car racing and pro-baseball draw crowds from all over the state. Tamer activities include hiking up the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and the Southern Illinois Wine Trail. Visits to the Ferne Clyffe State Park and Giant City State Park are also popular options for hiking strolls and nature treks. Those who like to go fishing can choose among Crab Orchard Lake, Devil’s Kitchen Lake and Lake Of Egypt which is a short drive south of Marion. - Browse the Marion Map or compare Marion accommodation from Hotels, Motels, B&Bs,
