or Mariposa accommodation? Formerly known as Logtown, Mariposa is the county seat of Mariposa County, California. With a name which is Spanish for ‘butterfly, the city is named after the flocks of Monarchs seen in the vicinity by early explorers. In the 2000 census, Mariposa had a population of 1,373.
Founded as a mining camp, Mariposa was originally further downstream but a flood caused the town to move to higher ground at a place which the miners called Logtown. Mariposa County includes much of Yosemite National Park and a large portion of the economy is tourism-related. The oldest courthouse still in use in California, which was constructed in 1854, is also found here.
Found at the southern end of Mother Lode, Europeans were attracted to Mariposa by the hope of finding gold. In the nineteenth century California Gold Rush, the Mariposa streams were panned and deep mines were worked underground.
