Marshall was founded in 1841 and quickly became the “Gateway to Texas” as major stage coach lines run through the area. By 1860 the city became the fourth largest city in the state and by 1880 has turned into the South’s largest cotton markets and, at this point, is already benefiting from the railroads that pass through. The city is also the very first city in Texas to have electricity.

The early 1900s brought new trade to the city – by this time it has gained the reputation of being the “Pottery Capital of the World” with the expansion of the ceramic industry; the last decades of that century was focused on demolition of many old buildings and the construction of modern infrastructures. Tourism was also developed beginning in the 1980s.

Today, Marshall holds 3 major annual festivals – Wonderland of Lights beginning Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, Stage Coach Days in May, and Fire Ant Festival in the second weekend of October.
