or Matera accommodation? Matera is a settlement and a prefecture in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy. It is the capital of the Matera province and has two cave districts Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso.
The town centre, the oldest part of town, was built on the edge of a bare plateau where a high rocky mount looms over the spot where a valley descends to the long deep river ravine. Wander around the Sassi districts, looking at the cramped town above its ravine, and the tumbling grey stone facades called caves. Visit a cave-life reconstruction and one of the local museums and absorb more of the history and unique atmosphere by exploring the quieter spots and visiting museums like Museo Nazionale Ridola and churches like San Pietro Caveoso, not a rock church. View the churches cut into the rock of hillsides and ravines such as Madonna dell'Idris and San Giovanni which features some charming Byzantine-style wall-paintings. Nearby, Palazzo Lanfranchi houses the Museo Nazionale d'Arte Medievale e Moderna della Regione Basilicata which incorporates the Pinacoteca D'Errico and more interestingly, the Centro Carlo Levi, which contains a range of paintings. More recent artwork can be seen in the well-presented sculpture gallery MUSMA, which exhibits sculpture from the nineteenth century onwards. Visit Matera's deep ravine called Gravina and the Tramontano Castlea are must see attractions.
During these long-standing, traditional festivals, the entire local population recognizes their origins, which are usually agricultural and pastoral. The centuries-old feast of the Madonna della Bruna, Festival of Popular Music, South International Festival Tango, The Arbor Culture and the Procession of the Mysteries among other tradition Carnivals.
