Known as the ‘Gateway to Yosemite’, because it is just two hours away by car from the famous national park, Merced was incorporated in 1889. It is also within short driving distance to Monterey Bay. The city is served by two high schools, Merced High School and Golden Valley High.
Points of interest in Merced include Applegate Park and Zoo, Bear and Black Rascal Creeks, the downtown area which is where you can find a live stage theater, first run movie theaters and a number of museums and shops, as well as the County Courthouse Museum and the Merced Multicultural Arts Center and the County Library. Main Street is home to various restaurants, cafes, and shops.
