Located in the county of New Haven and incorporated as a city in 1867, Meriden is also known as Silver City because of the large amount of silverware produced by such companies as International Silver and Meriden Cutlery. The Meriden Center and South Meriden are the main communities in the city.
Attractions to visit include some of the Meriden’s historic structures such as the Solomon Goffe house, built 1711 and known as the oldest house in Meriden. It is now known as the Solomon Gofffe Museum. Another attraction is the Hanging Hills’ Hubbard Park, created by the president of the Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Company Walter Hubbard. It is where Edwin Howard Armstrong made one of the first FM radio broadcasts in 1939. Located north of downtown Meriden, the park is home to a number of gardens and picnic spots and the main attraction, Mirror Lake. Hubbard Park can be found listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Other attractions include the Curtis Memorial Library, Colony Street, the historic high school building built in 1909, the old traffic tower, Red Bridge, the Meriden Square Mall and the Ezzo building, a prime example of Art Deco architecture.
