It has a total area of 21 square kilometers and, as of the 2000 Census, is inhabited by 15,542 residents. The city began as a settlement for European settlers that came from Waterbury, Connecticut.
At first, the town – as it was then – was mostly agricultural. In fact, it was called as the “Onion Capital of the World” because the farmers in the area specialized in growing several types of onions on the black muck portion of the marshy land that the area had once been. Then, the opening of Interstate 71 allowed the city to freely connect to other areas so that the industry shifted to retail and light.
