It is a landlocked city comprised of 63.7 square kilometers of land with no water body inside or around its boundaries.

The city was founded in 1941 by W.P. Atkinson who, along with others, planned the one-square-mile development of Midwest City after hearing speculations that an airfield is to be placed on the area. Today, the city sits on 24.6 square miles of land – a great improvement from the original plan. The airfield created on the area was named as Midwest Air Depot but was later changed to Tinker Air Force Base in honor of Major General Clarence L. Tinker.

The economy of Midwest City had been prosperous until the oil bust of 1983. When that occurred, the economy of the city and its immediate neighbors were greatly affected. Still, at the turn of the new millennium, the city experienced a large amount of development with many hotels, big box stores, and various establishments built all over the city.
