The city later on became a part of the Holy Roman Empire. The Middle Ages saw Milan prosper as a center for trade. It also underwent Spanish, French, and Austrian rule. One of the last outbreaks of the pandemic plague, known as the Great Plague of Milan, struck Milan from 1629 to 1631. It is estimated that the plague claimed 60,000 lives out of the 130,000 inhabited Milan at that time.
The city’s name is closely associated with its fashion roots. The English word ‘millinery’, which refers to the production of ladies hats, is derived from the city’s name. The city’s Lombard metropolis is known for its high-end fashion shops and houses. Most of the top designers in the world have at one point shown their designs in Milan. The Piazaa Duomo is known as one of the oldest shopping malls in the world.
