There is also the 11th century castle of St. Stephen which lies along the coast and houses a Benedictine monastery. The intriguing Jerusalem Hospital which dates back to the 14th century was built by Christians at that time. The 18th century Palazzo Palmieri and the Church of S. Domenico should not be missed. Monopoli’s port, Basilian underground churches and villages and Spanish manors are also worth visiting.
Many of Monopoli’s gastronomic delights can be found at local restaurants in the village or at the cafes and bars by the beach. Apart from cultural events and exhibits that are held throughout the year, Monopoli’s main event is the Monopoli Festivals which run throughout the summer period every year from July to September. There are over 20 exciting and entertaining events the main one being the religious festival for St Maria Della Madia in August.
