The village is best known for its historic red brick buildings and ancient architecture. Montauban has a vibrant cultural heritage. Activities here include golfing, boat riding and other water sports at Port Canal and Andrus Beach, cycling and horse riding. Parks and gardens such as the heavily vegetated Jardin des Plantes and the Roseraie are lovely recreational spots while eco-tourist activities include visiting the village’s cheese and wine farms.
Montauban is home to several historic monuments including the 17th century Place National at the centre of the historic city, the Notre Dame Cathedral with its fine architecture, Saint Jacques Church and its cannon balls and the Ingres Museum houses in the district palace. A visit to the 18th century Pont Vieux will provide you with an excellent panorama of the town. Montauban’s Natural History Museum, Folk Museum and the Resistance and Deportation Museum have an interesting story and collections lined up for all to see. The Carmes Temple is used for traditional religious music while the Municipal Theatre among a few others are superb entertainment spots.
A number of enjoyable cultural events are held in Montauban annually. The Feast of the Taste and the Flavours takes place on the last Sunday in July while the Feast of the Grape Harvest occurs on the first Sunday in September. In October, there is a weekend Agricultural Show and an Organic Products Fair and the Honeys’ Fair normally take place in November.
