Part of this town/county is a census-designated place. The whole island was designated as the Nantucket Histori District and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in as early as December 1966.

Being a popular tourist destination and a summer colony, the population of the otherwise quiet and small Nantucket increases to several folds to reach 10,000 to 50,000 in the summer months. Still, the area is sometimes blanketed by a very thick fog that the town is also known as The Grey Lady and had been the site of ships colliding or running aground.

There are many arguments as to the meaning of “Nantucket” and why the town is named as such. Still, majority believe that this came from a word that is spelled variably – natocke, nantican, nautican, and nantaticut – which could mean “in the midst of waters” or a “far away island”.

There are places on Nantucket that are national protected areas – Coatue (barrier beach), Hummock Pond, Miacomet Pond, Popsquatchet Hills, and the Squam Swamp. Other places of interest are the Lightship Basket Museum, Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum, Sankaty Head Light, and the Great Point Light.
