or New Bern accommodation? New Bern is a North Carolina city founded by European explorers led by Swiss adventurer Baron Christoph von Graffenried from Bern, Switzerland, hence the name. Located in Craven County, New Bern is the second oldest town in North Carolina.
There are numerous places to go and sights to see in New Bern. The city boasts of a diverse array of eating establishments, including the Flame, Outback steakhouse, Chelsea and Pollock Street. For great seafood, one can head to Captain Ratty’s, a restaurant known for its delicious seafood meals.
The city also has a number of taverns and cafes for casual nights out on the town. For friendly family activities, guests can shop or visit the city’s many historical sites. One attraction no visitor should miss is Tryon Palace, a reproduction of Governor Tryon’s palace, which burned to the ground in the 18th century. Tyron Palace that visitors can see today was built over the original site using state funds in the 1950s. Renovations have been continuously done on the place to keep it in shape, the most recent of which was done in 2008. The city was also the site of the Battle of New Bern when the American Civil War was just beginning. The town was eventually defeated and occupied by Union troops.
