It is a major port area in the country and is the largest metropolitan area of the state. It is often referred to as the most unique city in the United States and has earned the nickname of “the Big Easy.” The city is well-known for having one of the grandest carnival celebrations in the United States. Recently, however, it has also been famous as the main center of destruction of the ill-fated Hurricane Katrina that struck the city in 2006.
Founded on May 7, 1718 by the French Mississippi Company, New Orleans was named after a Regent of France, Philippe II duc d’Orleans. It was one of the few colonies that were colonized and managed by the French during the colonial period. The city was later ceded to the Spanish colonizers in 1763. From then on, it became a prosperous city and was considered in the 1830s and 1840s as the third wealthiest and most populated city in the U.S.
Today, New Orleans is one of the powerhouse economies of the United States because of its busy port area. It is the primary destination of oil and gas coming in from South America. Some of its main economic activities include oil refining and petrochemical production.

Some of the city’s main sights and attractions are the French Quarter, Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, French Market, Preservation Hall, Saint Louis Cemetery, New Orleans Mint and National World War II Memorial Museum.
