or Niigata accommodation? Niigata is the largest city on the Japan Sea Coast, and is the capital of Niigata prefecture, and can be reached by train, plane, bus, or boat. There is a very good bus system in Niigata, but as most of the main attractions are all within walking distance from each other, one can quite easily take a nice, slow stroll around to do a bit of sightseeing. For the major sights that are further away, cycling is recommended and there are several bicycle rental locations scattered throughout the city, just for the purpose.
Echigo Hillside Park, in Nagaoka, near Niigata City is a national park definitely worth a visit. Here you can enjoy beautiful Japanese flowers, trees, and gardens and there is a great restaurant and barbecue area, so you could spend the day there, if you wish to.
You can also enjoy a cruise on the Shinano River. The boat has an open-air deck where passengers can see all the views of the city and the river. There are three of these cruises every day.
The Northern Culture Museum is excellent. The building, which was built in 1885 –1887, once belonged to a wealthy family. There are documents, art collections, including paintings and sculptures, on display. The museum is comprised of several buildings, including restaurants and cafes.
Some of the other things to do in Niigata include shopping, in one of the wonderful malls, trips to the ocean, ferry rides down the river and a beautiful theatre. In winter there are many swans around, which in itself is very relaxing, just to watch them slowly gliding along. Apart from the hundreds of Japanese bars, there are also a number of foreigner-run bars in and around the city.
