The town began as North Bloomington but this name was changed during the town’s foundation in February 1865; it was then officially incorporated in 1867. The name was actually taken from the teacher-training institution named Illinois State Normal University which became the Illinois State University; the town is home to the main campus of the university.

As the years went by, Normal grew. This growth added infrastructures as well as tourist attractions to the town. In fact, the town is home to the Normal Theater, the Children’s Discovery Museum, Illinois State University Planetarium, and 17 public parks like the Fransen Nature Area, One Normal Plaza & Community Activity Center, and Children & Elders Forest. Still, the town is also home to industries such as the Mitsubishi Motors passenger car assembly plant.
