or Oamaru accommodation? The town of Oamaru is the main town in an area of New Zealand’s south island, known as the Waitiki District. It lies on the pacific coast of the island, and is roughly midway between Dunedin and Timaru. Reaching Oamaru is fairly easy; thanks to road and rail connections with both of these big cities, and the Oamaru Airport also has regular flights to and from Christchurch. Aside from its current status as an important centre in Waitiki, the town of Oamaru is also important in archeological terms, as there have been several finds in the area related to the history of the Maori people. These are located at Awamoa and the Waitaki River Mouth, and indicate that the area has been populated since before 1100 AD. After the area received a visit from James Cook’s Endeavour, European settlers began to stream into Oamaru, and the historic downtown area still boasts many buildings from that time, in the early 19th century. Another interesting attraction in Oamaru is the penguin colony, which is made up of blue and yellow-eyed penguins, and which are almost honorary citizens. These little birds nest throughout the town, including under the aptly named music club: The Penguin Club.
